During this project done at ECAL with Guy Meldem, we chosed to work on the control of light and smoke, and we built a 3 meters half circle of tubes that guide the smoke like a volumetric screen. We started with a simple setup using straws, a wooden plank, a tube we found on the street and a small smoke machine. We soon realised that the smoke machine produces a lot of heat which make the tubes melt even 1 meter after the smoke output. We tried to use metal tubes directly connected to the machine, but they became burning after 2min. The solution we found was to make a giant icecube, and build a cooling system with the burning tubes going through the ice. It allowed us to keep the system running for 30min.
We tested a lot of different visuals on the smoke screen, projecting with 2 different projectors. Panorama pictures were working pretty well, but we found that typography was the most interesting by creating a contrast beween the very organic and fluid shape of the smoke and the very straight classic typography.
